The pickup is bridge mounted as this offers a more acoustic sound than a body mount pickup.
These instruments have a feel similar to the conventional double bass, obviously they don't carry the same acoustic volume, when correctly amplified the UEB will offer an impressive tonal range with some real advantages. Upright Electric Basses are an excellent instrument for musicians who are on the road or doing a lot of gigging. UEB basses are very popular with Latin musicians as they appreciate the power and drive these instruments put out. Portability size and basic ease to bump in and out of a venue are always appreciated by the busy musician, as these instruments are not susceptible to damage when touring like conventional double basses. UEB's record well in live venues as they are very stable and seldom guilty of feed back. The advantage when you want to practice late at night, you won't be disturbing anyone, popular with the nocturnal habits of many Jazz musicians.
The instrument featured in the photos is about ten years old. I don't object to the less is more theory regarding the finish on an instrument, personally I don't like instruments smothers in lacquer.
