The string harness has a brass plate, these tarnish as brass has a natural patina, I like the look of this, it gives the instrument an element of time and age.
This is my 10 string Stephen Stick, what is the difference between this and a Chapman Stick, The Chapman stick is strung differently, they are strung with low bass strings in the middle with the outer strings being a lighter gauge.
More importantly it comes down to the musician and I working through what they want, from there I tailor the musicians requirement into an instrument. The Stephen Stick is popular with touring musicians who want and are able to play a wide range of styles and types of music from funk, jazz to rock and heavy metal. The stability and portability of the Stephen Stick makes it easy to take on the road. As a studio instrument they offer a huge dynamic range of sound, and have have an excellent recording voice, a characteristic I attribute to the great number of strings offering a choirs of harmonic and overtones. The very competent musician will go after these inherent qualities and exploit them resulting in an orchestra of possibilities.
In the photo below you will notice the brass has tarnished, the instrument like many on the website is well used. As I have explained on previous pages on the site I don't have an inventory of lots of instruments, instead I build to order. Please note : the instruments depicted on the website are up to twenty years old. As for the patinae of brass, I like it, it compliments the ageing of wood. Some people like to polish the brass plates etc, it comes down to taste. I don't coat any of the brass fixtures as coasted brass never ages well.
